Was not really sure what I wanted to do with this tangle. I decided to go with true Zentangle® method and just start with no planning and let this build on its own. Maybe that is why it took me longer to do. One thing that was a little more purposeful is that I wanted to try Narwal, a tangle that I had not tried yet. Enough rambling about things. This is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.
Tangles used: All Boxed Up, Cadent, Florz(variation), Narwal, and Genoa.
There was a discussion on one of the groups about what the definition of a tangle is. Someone suggested that Narwal was not a tangle because it used a pencil string and tangles are not suppose to use grids or things to complete them. Not sure about that but wanted to see if I could do Narwal without the pencil string. I was able to accomplish it. I have to admit I did have to watch the video as I was doing it. I do not think it turned out too bad for a first attempt.
If you have not done so all ready, would strongly encourage you check out the tiles and ZIAs posted on I am the Diva. I have not had a chance to look at very many. Usually just ones that show up in my reader or when people have also posted them in one of the FB groups.

Thanks for visiting. As always, comments are welcomed, encouraged, and appreciated.
Go Tangle !!
A beautiful tile, Donald! I agree with people that thinks Narwal is not a tangle because of the pencil lines needed. To be honest I was quite surprised when I first saw that.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you sent All Boxed Up for a walk! Very dynamic.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you combined all the tangles you used. They work well. Funny, I, too, spent yesterday trying to earn narwal. I think it's beautiful - tangle or not - and you've done a great job with it!
ReplyDeleteLove your Tile, Donald. Terrific patterns, and creative use of All Boxed Up.
ReplyDeleteNice tile, Donald. Somehow, I missed the controversy, so I'd better go check it out!
ReplyDeleteWas not really a controversy but was a thread on the new group started, CZT Tangle Discovery. One of the administrators posted a definition of a tangle. Was basically the one that Linda Farmer has on Tangle Patterns. She pose the question that Narwal was not a tangle because in the video it used a pencil string to make it. Was really no resolution.
DeleteI like the way you combined the tangles you chose to complement All Boxed Up. I've never tried Narwal and was not aware there was a controversy, um, discussion. Looking at the one you've done, I don't think I'm seeing a pencil string nor imagining why one would be necessary. I'll likely change my tune once I try it. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI like this tile, I also love Narwal as I find it fascinating. It's one of those patterns that needs a lot of concentrating but not sure I could do it without a string!
ReplyDeleteWonderful tile! Like your choice of tangles!
ReplyDeleteHm... I don't like such questions but the reason may be that I quite often use a pencil (yes, I'm guilty) and I even use a eraser (hides in her corner). I think the main part is: Zentangle has to calm yourself and makes you happy. It should make fun too - and if I'm more happy when I made a few lines with pencil so I can draw over them or erase them it's okay for me.
ReplyDeleteI tried Narwal without the string and it looked... interesting but not like Narwal *g*
I like your tile!
Lovely tile, Donald :) I like the different variations of all boxed up. I haven't had a chance to try narwal myself - must have a go!
ReplyDeleteI really like your work this week. I haven't tried Narwal yet either...so perhaps I'll give it a go soon! (wish I had more time in my life for play right now...but summers are that way). Regarding not using a pencil, a ruler, an eraser, etc....I sort of feel like if those aids are something that are helpful to a beginner or even a more experienced tangler...why not? I know that Zentangle is a process, but how each person creates or processes their art should be a personal choice. Wayne (hubbie) has been a working artist all his life and pretty much a self taught tangler although he's a CZT as well AND as in most of our life together...he just doesn't tell me what to do (unless I ask him). So when I ask him his opinion on how to draw this or that...he gives me options of how to do things the easiest way possible and practicing with a pencil is sometimes the easiest for me to be successful with for my learning process. At heart I am a teacher...mostly I taught stenciling and learned that there are about as many learning styles as there are people. So better to let the student determine what is best for them.
ReplyDeleteI really like what you have done with this challenge, It has a very unique look to it and your layout is beautiful. I love the the Narwal in the corner. It's beautifully done too. And I agree with that Lynell said above that everyone's style is different. I know that if someone tried to tell me that I couldn't use a pencil to make my guidelines, I would probably just avoid them in the future. I really don't think that art should be governed by silly rules as it is created by the artist and represents how they feel. You did a beautiful job on your tile this week. :)
ReplyDeleteYa know, I think it is Zen when you don't stress over it, so if you need a pencil string, like Narwal does, so be it...Sometimes I think rules get...overanalyzed...I love your tile, as always!
ReplyDeleteVery nice work! Thank you for sharing. Just discovered your blog (through A Little Lime) and have subscribed. Looking forward to your next inspirational post.
