Diva Challenge # 217: " Duotangle - Dex vs Bunzo... Thirty-five!!!

This week's Diva Challenge is a Duotangle, which is to use only two tangles. The one that she chose this time are Dex and Bunzo, which she chose for the number of letters in each tangles name. The significance of this is that yesterday was her 35th birthday. Did not do anything particularly creative. After I got done, I realized there is a similar format as the one that I did last week. Have to be careful I do not get into a rut. Here is what I came up with. I hope you like it.

Tangles used: Dex, Bunzo

Did not do any shading on this with graphite. I used stippling on the Dex instead of lines as it seemed easier to do with the the space available. 

I have looked at a few things that others have submitted, Most of them have been things that have shown up on my blog reader. I did not look though until I had almost finished mine so it was pretty well set.  If you have not done so, would encourage you to go to I am the Diva and check things out.

Square One: Focus Tangle - Squid

This week's focus tangle is Squid. I have used this one before but not a lot. I tend to forget about it a little as it is more representational. I do like it though. It is hard for me to think of doing a tile with Squid in it without it being an aquatic theme. I am sure that I will see some that are not, but that is what I think of. Tried a few new things with it. Over all I am pleased with the result. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Squid, Sanibelle, Angel Fish, Fengle, Tipple, Not sure if the vine has a name

Shading done with 2B pencil and Micron

I think you can always go to the Square One FB page and look at the posts. There will probably be some unique ones posted. I t think you do need to be a member to post. Being a member though does not require that you post, but it is nice to see a variety of tiles.

Diva Challene #203: "UMT - Athitzi by Seven

Have been busy most of the week with family things. Have not had a lot of time to do much tangling. Was not sure if I would get anything done for this challenge. I finally decided that I needed the time to unwind because of all the things going on. It was my way to take care of myself. This week's challenge is a Use my Tangle challenge. This is an unusual tangle and like Margaret Bremner, think of it more as a technique, but it can have dramatic results. The results on Seven's blog are a good example of this. You can click HERE to see her stepout and examples. I did not have a lot of time to play with this tangle so I kept it simple. Not totally thrilled with the results but also not totally disappointed either. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Athitzi, Hollibaugh, Gneiss, Betweed, Tipple, &  Stripes.  Not sure the others are tangles. One is stippling and the other is auraing the shape. 

Shading was done with #2 pencil.

Hope this shows up well, I usually take a picture but do not have access to my camera so I had to scan it and then try to enlarge it. Did not use a template. Was not too difficult. Normally when I do a free-hand Zendala, I start in the middle and work my way out. This time I started on the edge of the tile with the UMT and moved inward. The next thing I did is to do Gneiss and then did the curvy Hollibaugh. Finished by choosing different tangles to fill in the spaces. Decided to leave a few blank and just shade as it seemed like it was getting a little busy. It has been a while since I have done a Zendala and I started this before I realized that Erin at The Bright Owl had posted another Zendala Dare. Not sure I will have time to get to that one this time, but hope to do those again. I still have to learn to use the Zendala template makers I won also. Well that is enough rambling,

Square One: BB

The focus tangle for  Square One this week is BB. I have never used this tangle before. I have to be honest, it is one that just never attracted me. There is not really anything wrong with it, I just did not think of using in any tiles. When it was selected as the focus tangle I almost decided to forgo trying to do a tile. Honestly I was not sure what to do. I did not start out to do a monotangle. It just kind of emerged as I was doing it. O guess it is best to describe it as a Hollibaughesque BB.

This is also one of those tiles that I have mixed feelings about. There is not anything really wrong with it There is just not much about it that attracts me. I will do what i usually do with tiles like this. I will put it aside and go back to it later. Sometimes my perspective does change.  I will probably use BB a little more, but not in this way.  Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tried to accent this using stippling and some shading. It was difficult deciding what to do.

Square One, Purely Zentangle: Assunta and Ing

Did not get a chance to do anything with Assunta last week so decided to combine it with this week's prompt, Ing. There was an additional prompt which was to also focus on shading. I think for most non-art trained people, this is one of the more intimidating things to do. The fear is that you will ruin the tile after putting the work to do the tangles. I remember when I first started tangling I was told two things that helped. One was that the shading is not about light source or what you typically look at in art it is about highlighting the tangles. The other was to make copies of the tiles and try different things to see what different shading would look like and then pick the one that you liked the best. I have to admit that I do not do the later that much anymore. I also do not practice shading in different ways. I should really spend more time on this, but don't. One of the things I learned later is do not be afraid to put down graphite on the tile. there is always that concern about there being to much. I usually find myself adding more. That being said, the shading was the most difficult part of this tile. I was trying to get a little more rounding effect on the spokes of Assunta. Was not as successful as I would have liked. But as I said earlier, I do not practice this as much.

After looking at the picture and the post, decided to go back and add a little more graphite to the Assunta. Not sure that it shows up that well in the picture, but looking at the original, even though it is just a little darker on the edged, I like the second one better.
