More Pyrograpny Pendants: Icanthis, Tipple, and Ahh

I have been doing more burning lately on wood shapes.  I have done crosses and I also used round wood discs that are about 1.5".  I have a few more to do but I wanted to do an organic tangle.  I may have been a little ambitious.  I chose to do Icanthis.  It is definitely harder to burn than to draw with a pen. I am still very new to this medium.  Looking forward to trying more things. I remembered to do a short series of pictures to show how it progressed.

This last picture is the difference in the wood after I put the beeswax polish on it.

Tangles used: Icanthis,Tipple, Ah

The shading was done with a triangular shading tip.  Icanthis & Ahh was done with a tip called a spear. Don't remember the size, but it is small, The Tipple is done with  a 1.5 mm ball stylus.

More pyrography: Tangled crosses

I picked these up a couple of months ago but as often happens, life got in the way of doing anything with them.  I have done some before and enjoy doing them.  Some smaller ones I actually used a micron to draw patterns on them.  Did not want to do this this time.

 Some times the simplest patterns make for satisfying results.  These are wooden crosses that I got at a craft store. They are about 1.75" x 2.75"x ¼ ".  Not sure what the wood is. It does not say on the package.  Will explain a little more after the picture.

Cannot always do tangles in the way that would with a pen.  The tangle is like perf and used mostly as an embellishment. Some would say it is Tipple, but that tends to be larger. Ends up being a stippling effect.  I used a small stylus ball to do.  My burner is a Razertip.  I use a beeswax polish to finish.  It does darken the wood a little but I do not mind the effect of this.  I like the opposite effect. 

When finished will attach bales to the back and use a black waxed cotton cord  attached to that.

Adventures in Pyrography: Tangled Turtle Cutting board

Have been working on this for some time and was finally able to finish it.  It sat idle for a long time as was working on completing a few other projects.  The tangles that I used also took a while to do. Bought the cutting board from Michael's a while back.  Some of you may have seen the cow that did earlier.  Used a Razertip  D-10 burner with medium fixed regular skew for the line work. The tipple and border outline was done with a 2.3 mm stylus ball and the shading in Gneiss was done with a triangular shader.

Here is the finished project. Sorry I did not take lot of pictures of the proceess.  Took this one early on so you can see what I started with.

Dual Challenge: Diva Challenge #369 - Orb-tastic & Anything Goes - Tangled Art for Everyone - Ode to Crescent Moon

Not sure that I will get this done ion tome to post in the Diva Challenge.   I wanted to do this mostly because I needed to do something that was more repetitive and for me relaxing. I did accomplish this but it took longer than what I expected. I use Tipple a lot but not so much Crescent Moon.  What I did on this was to think of different ways that I could use Crescent Moon.  Are probably more, but I got at least four done.  I used Tipple in the one version in a way that I usually do with Crescent Moon.  I tried to not be so exact with the orbs and even did some "under work" rather than each one having to be a complete orb.  As is fairly common, the shading of this was one of the bigger challenges.  Here is what I come up with.  I hope you enjoy it.

Used 01 Micron and 2H and 4B pencil for shading.

Beyond the Basics class: Layered water color background

Do not post much about things that I do in a class but this was an interesting class.  I had introduced using a water color wash before but did not spend much time on adding layers.  Wanted to have them take their time putting down the water color before they tangled on the piece.  Am waiting to see the finished pieces as they were all so different.  One used a lot of small sections of color and used a lot of organic tangles, which is what she enjoys. With her permission may post a picture of it later.  I am showing the piece that I did.  I used larger sections of color and layered the same color on top. Did not try to layer different colors for muted or different effects.  Will post a series of pictures showing the piece as it progressed.  Really did not have a plan when I started. Picked a tangle and just let it develop.  Here is the results.

Thought I had a picture of just the water color but I guess that I did not .  I first did  what I am calling "Semi-crazy" Huggins.  Is not a regular grid but not too much "wonkiness".  I then put in Finery and then Puf.  

Next I added Inapod and then put Paradox around the outside.

I then added Zander in both sections. The next was the Flora variation and then added the Phicops and Zingers to finish it off.

I then added Mooka, Flux, and Tipple.  The Tipple was added and randomly.  Was looking at different orientations when I took this picture.

And here is the finished piece with the last section finished.   The paper is water color paper and is 6"x 8". 

The last tangle is Opsess, one that I did the step out for.

I have a couple of other projects I want to get to but want to do something like this again.  I would like to use smaller areas of color and try more blending like when doing the gems.  That is a time consuming process so not sure when I will get to it.

Beyond the Basics class and a gift package

I am getting ready for a Beyond the Basics class tonight. Decided to use an idea that was adapted by Debbie Huntington to make Valentine Cards. She adapted it from a Video done by Zentangle® HQ during the 12 Days of Christmas videos that they do.  Here is what I did for mine.

Did this as part of a challenge using 4 tangles. It was a on a FB group that I am a participant. Can use to make your own card with a personal message or use as a frame for a picture.  This used the standard tiles.  Could use the a black tile instead of he Renaissance tile.  I kind of like this combination.  Tangles used are Tipple, Sand Swirl, O-curly, and Plume_ar.  Highlighting was done with a white charcoal pencil and a graphite pencil.  The letters were done with a stub nib fountain pen.

The other thing I mentioned is that I received a package from my sister, who is also a CZT.  She was planning on getting rid of some things and asked me if I wanted some things.  I was not really sure all what she was going to send so it was fun opening the package and seeing what was there. There were a couple of things that I do not remember her talking about.  Here are some pictures of the things I received.

I got some gray Copic markers and Tombow pencils On the top are 2 Sakura Pigma pens. I took a separate picture of them as they did not seem to be on the group picture. The one thing that did not show up and is between the Copic cool gray markers and pencils.  It is a fine line fountain pen.  I have always liked using fountain pens but have not used them for a while. She has presented me with a couple and I enjoy using them.  Sometimes it is a little tricky, depending on the paper as sometimes it will bleed. I have put a nice blue ink in this one and am looking forward to using it.  Not sure if I will use it to tangle or not.  

This was one of the unexpected items.  I have not found out from her where she got it.  It is a pencil case that is made of a reinforced craft paper. It has a sipper.  If could find some it looks like it would be neat class project as could tangle on the paper.  Will explore this a little more fully.

Diva Challenge #347: "String Theory - Traced Objects "

This was a different challenge this week. I have participated in string theory challenges before but not sure if I had done a traced object one before.  Started this early in the week and just did not get to it.  Think there was a little procrastination as I was not sure what to do.  Still was not sure even after I had traced some things.  The challenge was to use things that were around you at the time not necessarily to pick something specific.  Will give more details later.  I used a Renaissance tile.  Here is what I came up with. Tangles used: Hollibaugh, Zander, Knightsbridge, Mooka, Tipple, & Flux

Did not say above but decided to take a picture of the tile before I did any highlighting or shading.   Was not sure what I wanted to do. At first was thinking of just using graphite.  I have used graphite on the Renaissance tiles before but not really a big fan of it.  Had done some layering of colored pencils to get more of a sepia shade for shading but did not really want to take, or have, the time to do this.  I finally decided I would use a white charcoal pencil

Not really sure how I feel about this.  It is okay.  Could not decide what I wanted to do with Hollibaugh so just left it with no  shading or highlighting.  

Almost forgot to mention what I used to create the string.  The bottom is a wooden handle on a crochet hook.  The two orbs are the inside of the finger holes on a pair of small craft scissors.  The last is the battery cover for my mouse.  I have to confess that what it reminded me of was a ferry boat that was on Lake Erie. It was primarily a vehicle transport and was referred to as the "cup and saucer".  Would go out to the Bass Islands off the Ohio coast.

Have not looked at what others have done.  May not even get to it before the next challenge.  Should be some interesting things as there about anything could be used to create your string.  If you have a chance would strongly recommend that you go to I am the Diva and see what others have come up with.

Diva Challenge #330: "Zentangle Plates"

This week's Diva Challenge is courtesy of Jeanette Clawson. She is a graduate of CZT #27 although she has been tangling for a number of years.  You can read about her story here on The Diva's blog. She explains a little about what lead her to this art form.  Like many, it was a tool in dealing with things.  It isn't that tangling is the only one that can do this but I think its portability makes it easy to use anywhere.

The basis of her challenge is her love of mandalas.  When she was at the CZT seminar they discussed tangle plates, which is really a mosaic or arcs and when you put 4 tiles together, they form a plate.  You can get as symmetrical and as intricate as you want.  She did 4 tiles but indicated that it was not necessary to do 4 for the challenge. You could do only one.

I like mandalas also and have about 100 that I have done over the years.  I have not done the mosaic style of this challenge.  Was not sure that I was going to participate due to time and I knew that I would not be able to do 4 tiles.  My intent was to do one tile.   It is similar to the stripes challenge that was done a couple of times.  Well when I was ready to start, I found out that I did not have a full size tile. I had some Bijou tiles. I only had two of them. Which I decided to use. So mine is a "broken plate".

As a time saver, I decided to do the same tangles on similar rings.  Here are the two tiles that I completed.

Tangles used: Tipple, Cubine, Hibred, Meer, Bird on a Wire

ZIA Variation on Aloha

When I did the Diva Challenge using Aloha I had mentioned that I was working on something that I was going to use a variation of it in. I finally was able to complete it.  This is a picture mat for a 5x7 picture.  It will fit in an 8x10 frame. I used a blue 01 micron. Did not do any shading on this. I could but I like it enough without it that I am going to leave it.  Have really enjoyed using Zander lately. Works great as a border or as a string.  Here is what I came up with. Diva Challenge #324: "Tangled Heart"

I was not sure about this challenge. I am not a heart type of person. I decided to do something because I really needed to tangle. This week's challenge is a guest post by Jessica Davies. During the summer, the Diva will have some guest posts to give her a little break and allow her some time with her family. Jessica chose this prompt due to some recent health problems and she used tangling as a way to help deal with the stress associated with it. There is a lot of anecdotal information of how tangling has helped a variety of people with a myriad of challenges.

I did decide that I would participate. I am not sure about what I came up with but the process was definitely relaxing. It is not that I do not like this tile, it is that it does not have the flow that I sometimes imagine in my head.  Usually the more I look at it, the more comfortable I become.  Here is what I came up with. I chose a Zendala tile as I had not done one in a while and it is also a little bigger. I have not done a zendala for quite some time. May have to revisit that again soon.

Another experimentation on Bookmarks: Using a fountain pen to tangle

I know that this is probably not new to some of you but I have not done this before. My sister got me some fountain pens for Christmas. I have used different pens and even done some work with dip pens but had never tried to tangle with a fountain pen. I use them at work, primarily for signatures and entering some information in a chart as I like the way that it looks. It also usually makes me slow down some, so whatever I write is a little more legible.

I know there are a couple of CZTs that have commented that they prefer to tangle with a fountain pen and some of the videos that Zentangle® has posted have been done with a dip pen. This is usually something done by Marie, I do not think I have ever seen Rick use one. Well, one of the pens that my sister got for me has a .03 nib, which is similar to one of the microns. Figured that would make it similar to using a micron. Also she got me some colored inks to try. One of them I used to write a letter, just to see what it looked like. Is not a color I would use regularly to write with so I decided to use it to tangle a bookmark.  Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Tipple, Narwal, Phicops, Dragonair, Zinger, Angel Fish, Boing (variation), Sinchun, and a few little relatives of Bijou. 

Did not do any shading on this. Did try to to a little stippling with the fountain pen. That will take more practice.

Two for One: Diva Challenge #270-Skye by Margaret Bremner, CZT and Square One focus-Bales.

Had some time to do some tangling. Actually I made time. I probably should have been doing some other things. This week's Diva Challenge is to use Margaret Bremner's new tangle Skye. I saw it when it was first posted. I did not have time to try it then. Since the Diva made it the challenge, it was the push I needed to do it. It is a little tricky and there are a couple of spots that did not turn exactly as I had planned, but it is okay. To get a little more mileage from the tile I also included Bales which is the focus tangle on Square One. As with a lot of tiles, one of the biggest challenges is the shading. Not sure what is occurring as I had been feeling a little more comfortable with the shading that I had been doing. Finding it more difficult for some reason.  Here is what I came up with. Diva Challenge #269: "New Official Tangle: Ellish"

This week's Diva Challenge is almost like a UMT challenge. The Diva chose to highlight the newest tangle coming from Zentangle® HQ, Ellish. This is an interesting tangle. The basic pattern is not that challenging. Much like Paradox and Auraknot, it helps to keep track of where you are with the auras/lines.  For me one of the challenges was to come up with a way to connect and grow it. This served a dual purpose as I had taught the tangle to a class a couple of weeks ago but had not played much with it yet. I told them when I demonstrated it, I was not sure of how it could be grown. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

One of the other challenges with this tile was how to shade it. The more I look at it, I am getting a little  more comfortable with it, but still a little uncertain.

Diva Challenge #268: " A-bit-o-black"

Had some time to try this week's challenge. It was interesting to me. The challenge was to add a little more black to the tile. At first I thought it might be an easy tile to do. I was wrong. But I persevered. Chose some tangles that I usually just shade or I did them in reverse. The end result was okay. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Cadent, Jetties, Genoa, Tipple, and Betweed

Shading done with a 2B pencil. I also used a white Gelly Roll to outline the Tipple.

I started with the Tipple. I am so use to not filling this in that I was not thinking about leaving some space in between them so it did not look like a large black blob.  Was not sure exactly sure what to do but came up with outlining them with the white Gelly Roll.  

I have not looked at what others have done. I saw one that showed up in my blog reader but that is it. Hoping to have time to look at more of the posts. If you have not done so, would recommend that you visit

Diva Challenge #265: "Stripes"

I have not been able to participate in many of the recent Diva Challenges. When I saw this week's, I thought that this was doable with the time I had. Unfortunately, it was not until the weekend. I finally did get it finished. I have not looked at many of the other posts. Most of what I have seen are ones that show up in my blog reader. This is a fun challenge as there is a lot of opportunity for variation. Usually the results are very interesting.

At one point I thought of doing something a little different, like Huggins. Decided I did not really have the time to do this so I went with a more traditional approach. I did at least vary it a little by making the stripes curvy. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used (top to bottom): Tipple, Munchin, Cubine, Shattuck, Keys(?), Tropicana, & 'Nzeppel.

Shading was done with HB and 2B pencils.

 Put the question mark as I am not sure what the name of this pattern is. I have seen it used and wanted to try something different. 

As I said, I have not seen many of the other posts. I am hoping to get a chance to look at as many as I can. Would recommend that you take the opportunity to visit I am the Diva and look at the creative things that people have posted.

Two Challenges in One: Diva Challenge #239 & Zendala Dare # 112

Have not been able to participate in any of the challenges that I usually do. Decided

that it I was going to do it needed to come up with a way to use one tile for both challenges. The Diva Challenge is to use the tangle Muchin. You could also add the challenge of doing white on black. The Zendala Dare was the usual format of The Bright Owl posting a template and pretty much leaving it up to the person what they wanted to do with it. This did present a challenge as I usually do not change the template a lot. There is nothing that says you cannot change it but I always viewed it as part of the challenge was using the template. Well to complete one tile for both challenges I did not think I could accomplish that with the template that was provided. What I did was a pretty significant change. Here is what I came up with. Diva Challenge #231: Guest Blogger - Sharla Hicks, CZT - " The Undulating Tangles in C and S minor"

This week's guest blogger has an interesting challenge. It is to take a couple of the basic strokes and play with them. There are a few more suggestions. One is to take familiar tangles and work in a series. The other is to take a new one and begin a new series. This makes a little more sense if you look at her entire post here. She developed her style by redoing the same tangle and changing or pushing each attempt. I think this is what she means by a series.

When I hear undulating, the first person that I think of is Helen Williams. She has a way of weaving her tangles and lines across the page that is unique to her. So I chose to use one of her patterns, Tumbleweed. Cannot say that it is undulating as what hers would be, but it was interesting doing it. At some time I would like to try to do a little more with it. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Shading done with 4B, 6B, and HB pencils.

I think I may have gotten a little carried away with the shading. I thought of using gray Prismacolor pencils to do the shading but I only have 2 gradients, 30% and a 50%. Did not think this provided enough variance. For some reason when I try to do Tumbleweed, I do not get that nice broad flow that I would like. Need to keep working with it. 

I have not had a chance to look at many of the things that others have posted. A few have shown up in my blog reader. Hope can look at them during the rest of the week. Square One Focus Tangle: Hollibaugh

This week's focus tangle on the Square One FB page is Hollibaugh. This is an interesting tangle. It is usually one that I always teach in the Basic Class because of the drawing behind technique. Wanted to do something a little different with it.  Not sure when I did this before. Seems that maybe it was part of a challenge or maybe it was in response to a post in one of the FB pages. I like it because it adds a little flair to the tangle. Have been seeing Hollibaugh tangles that people have been doing at  Can-tangle. Not sure exactly what they were doing as there were just pictures with little information. Think that it is doing tangleations and trying to stretch tangles a little more. Because of the way that this is done was also able to include last week's focus tangle, Finery as I was not able to post a tile. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Diva Challenge #224: "Monotangle - Tipple"

This week's Diva Challenge is an interesting one. It is interesting not only because it is a monotangle but also because of the tangle that is used. She chose Tipple. Normally, will use this tangle to fill or augment a tile or other tangles. Trying to do a whole tile with it reminds me of the stippling challenge that was done a while back. You are creating something else with this tangle. I am looking forward to seeing a lot of really unique and interesting things that people have done.

There was something else that was unique about this challenge. I have no other art training other than Zentangle®. Before that it was only the mandatory classes that I took through elementary school. I have known people that who can form an image in their mind and they translate it to paper. That does not describe me. Over the almost 4 years I have been tangling there have been times when I was doing a challenge or just working on a tile that before I started, I would have some of idea of what I hoped/wanted it to look like. Was not really pre-planned, just a concept of what I wanted at the end. I know that seems a little contrary to the whole Zentangle process but not really. I learned to enjoy what the result was. I also learned to not make any judgments about a tile until it was done. It was not always what I envisioned but it did not mean I did not like it. Sometimes, I liked it better than what I had envisioned before I started. Well, this tile was the only one that I can remember that the end result really was like what I envisioned.  I will say more about it after the picture.  Here is what I came up with. Shading is always a challenge for me even when I like the result. It is particularly a challenge when I am trying to shade any color or in this case the brown micron. I have tried a number of things but never was all that pleased with the result. This was done with a layering of Prismacolor pencils. I probably tried about 15 different combinations before I came up with this. This is probably the best one that I have come up with. It is first a layer of Goldenrod, then White and lastly Burnt Ochre. I then used the blending pencil to smooth and burnish it. As I said, I was pleased with the result.

Diva Challenge #211: Unchallenge/Challenge - Flux

Was not sure what to label this post as usually I just use what The Diva puts on her blog. For a brief time it looked like there would not be a challenge this week due to medical complications for her youngest son. She chose to use the recent Zentangle® post on Flux. So that became the Challenge. I remember the two different ways of doing Flux in my CZT seminar. I taught both versions in my basic class as a way to reinforce there are no mistakes and step outs are a guideline to doing a tangle. Most people get a chuckle that the developers of Zentangle have two different ways of doing Flux. Kind of relaxes them that what they do does not have to match what I illustrate. I explain as like different fonts that you might use on a computer. some fonts have commas and quotation marks that look like Maria's Flux. Others look like Rick's version. Both get recognized as the same thing. That is the same for both versions of Flux.

 I enjoy flux and use it quite a bit. I tend to do Rick's version as it just seems to flow better for me. I did try a  little different form of Maria's version and I felt better about it. As with a number of tiles, although it is decreasing, the most difficult part of this tile was the shading. Part of this is that there was not a lot of white space. My first reaction was that the tile was too busy. It is more appealing the more I look at it. Anyway, here is what I came up with, I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Flux, Tipple, Fescu, & Zinger

Shading was done with 2B pencil

Got this done a day earlier than I usually do. Hopefully I can spend some time looking at the other tiles posted this week. Strongly encourage you to look at what is on I am the Diva.
