Two for One: Diva Challenge #270-Skye by Margaret Bremner, CZT and Square One focus-Bales.

Had some time to do some tangling. Actually I made time. I probably should have been doing some other things. This week's Diva Challenge is to use Margaret Bremner's new tangle Skye. I saw it when it was first posted. I did not have time to try it then. Since the Diva made it the challenge, it was the push I needed to do it. It is a little tricky and there are a couple of spots that did not turn exactly as I had planned, but it is okay. To get a little more mileage from the tile I also included Bales which is the focus tangle on Square One. As with a lot of tiles, one of the biggest challenges is the shading. Not sure what is occurring as I had been feeling a little more comfortable with the shading that I had been doing. Finding it more difficult for some reason.  Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Skye, Girdy, Bales, and Tipple.
Shading done with HB and 2B pencils.

Have not looked at many of the other posts. If I am going to participate, I usually do not look at what others have done until I have completed mine. Occasionally I will see one that shows up in my blog reader.  If you have not visited I am the Diva yet, I would encourage you to do so. I would also encourage you to try your tile. It is fun and you do not have to post your work. Although people who participate are very supportive

Square One Focus Tangle: Hollibaugh

This week's focus tangle on the Square One FB page is Hollibaugh. This is an interesting tangle. It is usually one that I always teach in the Basic Class because of the drawing behind technique. Wanted to do something a little different with it.  Not sure when I did this before. Seems that maybe it was part of a challenge or maybe it was in response to a post in one of the FB pages. I like it because it adds a little flair to the tangle. Have been seeing Hollibaugh tangles that people have been doing at  Can-tangle. Not sure exactly what they were doing as there were just pictures with little information. Think that it is doing tangleations and trying to stretch tangles a little more. Because of the way that this is done was also able to include last week's focus tangle, Finery as I was not able to post a tile. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Hollibaugh, Paradox, Tipple, Finery, & Shattuck
Shading done with 2B pencil

Have been a number of interesting things posted on the FB page. If you do not regularly follow this page, would encourage you to do so. You can see some great work and get some inspiriation about things to do. Is not really a site to post questions but can contact the poster in a private message with questions.

Thanks for visiting. As always. comments are welcomed, encouraged, and appreciated.

Square One Focus Tangle : Munchin

The focus tangle in the Square One, Purely Zentangle® FB page is Munchin. I have used this tangle before, but I have to admit that I have not used it a lot. Not sure why. Probably because there are a couple of other tangles that I use in triangular areas. I also am not sure about using this in a definitive area. I know that strings are suppose to be guidelines but I am more likely to follow them. This is one that I think works better as a free form tangle. Enough said. Here is what I came up with. I hope hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used : Munchin, Flora, Henna Drum
Shading done with 4B pencil.

Have to work on not making my triangles so similar in size. Have seen a number of creative tiles with this tangle. Looking forward to seeing more.

Square One Focus Tangle: Meer

This week's focus tangle on Square One is Meer. I have not used it a lot but it does have some interesting possibilities. I have to admit, I was not feeling particularly creative when doing this. I decided to keep it simple. I have seen some really creative uses of this tangle posted in the FB page. That being said, I am not disappointed with the way that this turned out. Probably one  of the biggest challenges was trying to decide what orientation I would use to photograph it. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Square One Focus Tangle: Arukas

I am posting this with a little trepidation. Just recently checked out a site that is stealing peoples' images and then selling them on posters. This really makes me angry as some of the images were posted within the last couple of weeks. Do not really know how many of mine are on their site, but saw probably about 10 before it stopped letting me look at images. Do not know if they have sold any posters using my images. I would post a message to them in this blog but I am sure they do not read the blog they just steal the images. The information that I read indicates that it somewhere out of the US. Probably makes it impossible to do anything about it. Have to come up with some easy way to watermark my images so it will make it hard for them to use.  Enough venting, on to the Focus Tangle.

Arukas is a fun tangle to do. Not always sure how to get it to "play well" with other tangles. Just started and let it go where it wanted. Not sure what I think of this one. Do  not hate it but to me is a little disconnected. Did have a chance to try a new tangle which if I can remember it, will use in other pieces. The new tangle is Intwine.  Here is what I came up with. Hope you enjoy it,(except you Wallpart!!!)

Tangles Used: Arukas, Shattuck, Meer, Cruze, & Intwine

Square One Focus Tangle: Flux

This week's focus tangle is Flux. I have not done a focus tangle for a while. Have too many other things demanding my time. When I saw that it was Flux figured that I could get something done before I need to focus on prepping for my class on Saturday. I enjoy doing this tangle. I also use it regularly in my Basic class as it is a good tangle to demonstrate the flexibility of Zentangle®, and that there are no mistakes and no hard and fast rules. Rick and Maria have very different ways of doing this tangle. I liken it to the different fonts on a computer. Commas, apostrophes and quotation marks look different in different fonts but we still see them as the same thing. Both ways of doing this are recognized as the same tangle. Here is what I came up with I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Flux- both versions, Scroll Feather, Ahh, Antidots, & Featherfall. I do not know if the vine with Antidot has a name or not.

Square One : Focus Tangle - Purk, Photo

When I originally posted this tile I mentioned that I did not  have access to my camera. The scan really made everything "white-out" did not really show much of the shading. Did take a picture of it and this is what it looks like. Like the picture much  better.

Tangles used: Purk, Quib (variation), Flux, Tripoli, and Zinger,
I know that Zinger was last week's focus tangle but I included it in this tile also. Kind of went along with the Flux.

Square One: Focus Tangle - Purk

Got to the focus tangle early this week. Purk is the focus tangle this week at Square One. I have used it in the past. It is one that I enjoy but have not used it lately. I enjoy connecting it to other tangles. That is what I did in this tile. I threw in a couple of my other favorite tangles as well. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Purk, Quib(variation), Tripoli, Flux, and Zinger
Shading was done with an HB and 4B pencil

I usually take pictures of my tiles but I do not have my camera so I had to scan this. Even though I took off the "remove dust" setting, it did not scan that well. When I have access to my camera, I may take another picture and post that.  If you are on FB, there are a lot of great tiles on the Square One site.

Square One: Focus Tangle - Zinger

This week's focus tangle for Square One is Zinger. While I like this tangle, I tend to see it as an embellishment and not a main tangle. I think that came out in this tile. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used; Zinger, Pendrils
Shading done with HB and 4B pencils.

This was an relaxing tile to do. Nice long lines and repetitive stokes. Not sure about the shading on this one.  Did not come out quite the way that I had envisioned but that is okay. Think maybe I tried to do too much with the shading. I need some work on this. It is not something I practice much.

Square One: Focus tangle - Cubine

Getting this done just under the wire. I know it is not a challenge, but I do like to get them during the week that they are listed as a focus. I have used Cubine a lot. Most of the time it is a consistent grid. Wanted to do something a little different. Had been thinking about for a while but just never got around to trying anything. I am pleased with the way this turned out. Had not used cross hatching as a way to shade before. I was pleased with the way this went for a first try. If there is anything that I would change it would be the Flux/ Poke Root combination. Did not really turn out the way it did in my head. That is okay though. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Square One: Tripoli

Did not get this done during the week that it was the focus. But as they say on the page, theirs is not a challenge and people can submit things anytime. I like Tripoli. It can sometimes present some interesting challenges but it is still fun to do. This did not turn out exactly the way that I intended. In my mind when I started I wanted to try to do a spiral. Did not turn out that way and just let it go where it wanted to. Added the organic features for contrast. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Square One: Focus Tangle - Squid

This week's focus tangle is Squid. I have used this one before but not a lot. I tend to forget about it a little as it is more representational. I do like it though. It is hard for me to think of doing a tile with Squid in it without it being an aquatic theme. I am sure that I will see some that are not, but that is what I think of. Tried a few new things with it. Over all I am pleased with the result. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Squid, Sanibelle, Angel Fish, Fengle, Tipple, Not sure if the vine has a name
Shading done with 2B pencil and Micron

I think you can always go to the Square One FB page and look at the posts. There will probably be some unique ones posted. I t think you do need to be a member to post. Being a member though does not require that you post, but it is nice to see a variety of tiles.

Square One Focus Tangle: Mooka - More traditional

I decided to do another tile with Mooka today rather than try to squeeze it in later in the week. Actually, if I am honest about it, it also allowed me to avoid some tasks that I am not all that motivated to do read organize information for taxes. But I did enjoy doing this and it gave me some much needed shading practice. I think the shading is what makes the traditional Mooka so beautiful. Over all I am pleased with the way that this one turned out. I guess if I really wanted to be critical I could find things that I do not like but I am going to focus on the process. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Mooka, Zinger, Keeko
Shading was done with the standard Zentangle® pencil.

Square One Focus Tangle: Mooka - Gone Wild

This week's focus tangle on Square One FB is Mooka. This seems to be a tangle that people either really like or they really dislike it. I do not have a great relationship with it, but it is getting stronger. I think it is one that is a little more difficult to play with but that is exactly what I tried to do. I had done it before on a black tile. But that would not be an acceptable post on Square One. I have seen some very nice renditions of this tangle. Some have been in the traditional style. Meredith Yuhas is one of those. She just has a flair for this tangle. Have not seen one done by Shelly Beauchamp yet. She does some great looking things with this tangle also. If I have time, I may try to get a more traditional Mooka done later. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used as embellishment: Crescent Moon, Stripes. Phicops, Hibred, Tipple, Meer, Ahh, Gneiss, & Diva Dance

Square One Focus Tangle: OOF

This week's focus tangle at Square One is Oof. This is one that I think I did something with when it first came out but not a lot since then. It reminds me a lot of Bales, except it does not have the grid lines. I did not realize that my string for this was similar to Chris Titus's string until I was about half way through. Decided to continue with it anyway. Used different tangles to finish it so like a lot of tiles, even though the string is the same, the end result is different. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Oof ( with lots of variations), and Featherfall

Shading was done with 2B & 4B pencils.

Square One: Bunzo - Take 2

I really do like the tangle Bunzo. I think that the flow of the pen makes it easy for me to relax as I am not thinking about curves or where it needs to end. It is a stroke that flows easily from my pen. I started this last night when I was tired and also avoiding getting information together for taxes. I know I have to do it, but it is a lot more fun to tangle. Much like the last one I did not worry much about shading the tangles but more shading the total image. It is okay, I probably could have extended the shading around Bunzo out a little further. I did not want to take the time to add to it as I have a lot of things to get to. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it. I enjoyed creating it.

Tangles used: Bunzo, Quandary, Tripoli, &  a little Quib.
I used a #2 pencil for the shading, maybe should have used a 4B, and the white dots in the triangles in Quandary are with a white Gelly Roll pen.

Square One : Bunzo

The focus tile for this week at Square One is Bunzo. Have not used this one for a while. When it first came out, I did it a lot and used it as the centerpiece of a couple of cards. It is fun to see how you  can vary the size of it. Do not do a lot of other variations. This ended up being a tile with an organic nature. Was totally intended, but I did want to use Scroll Feather. This is another tangle that I enjoy using and have not used it for a while. That is really the only reason that I used it. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Bunzo, Featherfall, Scroll Feather, Tipple, & Ahh

Did something that I have not really done in a while. I did not do any shading on this tile. I thought about doing some for just a brief moment and decided against it. I was okay without it. May change my mind later and add some, but do not think so.

Square One: Sez

Got to this early in the week. Probably the only way I was going to get a tile done. This week's focus tile is SeZ. I am not sure that I have used this tangle before. I have put it with a few others. It is one that I am not sure how to shade. I did minimal shading on it.  Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Sez, Paradox, Cadent, Betweed

Square One: Strircles

This is actually a late post. This is the focus tangle for Square One for February 20. I have not used this tangle a lot. It is like Nipa. I know it is there, I just do not use it much. Kept this pretty simple. Mostly because I got to it later and still have some other things to do, like clear snow. Even though is not much to it, I do like it. I hope you enjoy it.

Square One: Huggjns

The focus tangle on Square One this week is Huggins. I do not use this a lot. Am more likely to use Cadent. For some reason, getting the lines in the right direction is more challenging on this one. I have to concentrate more on that then just the stroke. The rest of the tile came together rather easily, after some early brain freezes about what to do. Once I started it flowed fairly well. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Huggins, Flux, Paradox, Striping,  Mak-Rah-Mee, Purk, Rope, & Zander
Shading was done with a #2 pencil and stippling.
