Diva Challenge #359: "String Theory - Finger Stringer"

This week's Diva Challenge presented different challenges to me than last weeks.  Last week's was what I consider "regular" tangling challenges of focus.  This week had to do more with my mood and reaction to recent events.  I will try to explain this without boring you too much.

 There are typical life events, like dealing with aging parents that have been dealing with for about a year.  There are probably events everyday that someone will have a reaction to.  This past week I guess they have been closer to me or people I know.  They are not unique, except to these individuals.  I know people who were affected by the terrible crash in Saskatchewan province that killed 15 members of the Humbolt Broncos hockey team. Then there was the devastating fire to the home, and death of fellow CZT Cris Letourneau's husband in the fire.

 I found my self with very strong reactions to this.  I wanted to do something as words didn't seem enough.  Was not sure what to do. When I saw what this week's challenge was, I began trying to think of a way I could use this art form that Cris is so much a part of it to honor her, her daughter Alexa,  and these other people.  I had a couple of ideas but was not sure that I would be able to do any of them.  I finally decided on something to try.  Not sure that I pulled it off, but this is what I came up with.  I hope you enjoy it.

I was not sure that this really fit the challenge exactly.  I was able to draw around one hand, folded. I was unsure whether to tangle on the string itself and opted not to. I think it would have gotten lost in the rest or the tile.  On a regular tile I would not worry about this as much and actually prefer that the string get lost.  As I stated above, I am not sure that the double heart border is actually a tangle.  There are really two ways to do this.  One is you can make connecting hearts and then flip the tile and add the upper arcs of a heart in the space between them. The other is to make altenating "S" shapes.  By alternating I mean you do one and then do mirror images.  That does take some focus, at least for me.

Diva Challenge #324: "Tangled Heart"

I was not sure about this challenge. I am not a heart type of person. I decided to do something because I really needed to tangle. This week's challenge is a guest post by Jessica Davies. During the summer, the Diva will have some guest posts to give her a little break and allow her some time with her family. Jessica chose this prompt due to some recent health problems and she used tangling as a way to help deal with the stress associated with it. There is a lot of anecdotal information of how tangling has helped a variety of people with a myriad of challenges.

I did decide that I would participate. I am not sure about what I came up with but the process was definitely relaxing. It is not that I do not like this tile, it is that it does not have the flow that I sometimes imagine in my head.  Usually the more I look at it, the more comfortable I become.  Here is what I came up with. I chose a Zendala tile as I had not done one in a while and it is also a little bigger. I have not done a zendala for quite some time. May have to revisit that again soon.

A Challenge Piece that did not get completed in time

I have not posted or participated in any challenges for quite some time. I won't bore you with any of the details/reasons for this. There were a couple of recent Diva Challenges that I wanted to participate in. One I did not even start. The other I just did not complete during the week of the challenge. Since I had not posted anything for a while, figured I would at least put it here since I finally got it done.

I combined the two challenges to come up with this piece. The first one that I wanted to do was the Tripoli challenge. I enjoy this tangle even though it does present certain issues. The second came from a FB post regarding the difference in how we may tangle depending on whether it is for a class or just for our own enjoyment. There were a number of folks who indicated they thought there were significant differences. I do not know if I would say that there are significant differences, but there are some. When doing for my own enjoyment/relaxation I tend to use tangles that use simple repetitive strokes and I do not have to refer multiple times to a step out. I also tend to fill most of the tile. I do not think about if it is cluttered. I also tend to try some new or different things when I am doing a tile just for me.

Diva Challenge #252:"String Theory: "Tangle within a Tangle ... it's like inception ... but with tangles"

This week's Diva Challenge is an interesting one. Was not sure what I wanted to do. Most of what I thought about first were grid patterns, which I did not really want to do. I had seen some interesting ones before. I remember one my sister did a while ago when she did Beeline inside of Beeline. It looked neat but did not want to repeat it. One of the first thoughts that I had was Mooka. I have used Mooka as a string before so I wanted to do something different. Just begun looking at different tangles and thinking about how I could use them in this challenge. I finally decided on Well. I used the one variation. This variation did not have the lines that made it look organic. Maria did one on their blog when the tangle was introduced. I chose to use Helen Williams variation of Well. Not sure if this is the random dot version or the free hand but it is definitely not a grid. If you want to see her work on this go to a little lime. Tangles used: The string is Well. Used Fassett and Betweed inside. Zinger and Fescu used as embellishment.

Highlighting done with white charcoal pencil and Zenstone. 

I used a Renaissance Zendala as I still had not put any of the original tiles in my kit. It gave me a chance to work on these though as I have not done any for a while.

Not particularly pleased with either the charcoal pencil or the Zenstone. It is a while since I used them. Not sure if it was the pen or the tile, but the charcoal pencil seemed to smudge the brown micron. Not as much with the Zenstone but it still did a little. Oh well, it is all good.

Diva Challenge # 251: "Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day"

This week's Diva Challenge is a special one. Special for the participants and The Diva herself. Those who have participated, or followed her challenge know that this is a syndrome that impacts her family. After many trials, her youngest son was finally diagnosed with Moebius Syndrome. Dealing with this has been quite a journey for the family. It is one that the Diva has allowed us to be a small part of by posting pictures and updates or her son as he is growing up and participating in this challenge which she also links with the Moebius Syndrome support group. You can read more about this her blog, I am the Diva.

Was not sure that I was going to get this done. It is a different tile for me. I chose to use a Zendala® tile instead of the standard square tile. I also used color a lot but it is still monochrome as it is only one color. Not sure I have done this before. I also left a lot of negative space. I have gotten more comfortable with this but it still something I will mull over a lot. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Knightsbridge, Diva Dance ( in honor of the Diva herself), and Hollibaugh

I used a purple micron for the Moebius Syndrome logo and to outline Hollibaugh. The highlighting/shading is down with multiple Prismacolor pencils; lilac, violet, parma violet. I have used the Prismacolor pencils before but I am not sure that I used them on an official tile before. I used the blending pencil but was not really pleased with the way that it blended. I could smooth it out but not really get gradients that well. Had to use very light pencil  to get that effect. This was, I think the first time I used a Prismacolor pencil for so much highlighting. I am pleased with the result. 

I am hoping to get a chance to look at the other submissions for this challenge. I also have a class tomorrow to finish preparing for also. If you have not all ready done so, I strongly encourage you to visit I am the

Two Challenges in One: Diva Challenge #239 & Zendala Dare # 112

Have not been able to participate in any of the challenges that I usually do. Decided

that it I was going to do it needed to come up with a way to use one tile for both challenges. The Diva Challenge is to use the tangle Muchin. You could also add the challenge of doing white on black. The Zendala Dare was the usual format of The Bright Owl posting a template and pretty much leaving it up to the person what they wanted to do with it. This did present a challenge as I usually do not change the template a lot. There is nothing that says you cannot change it but I always viewed it as part of the challenge was using the template. Well to complete one tile for both challenges I did not think I could accomplish that with the template that was provided. What I did was a pretty significant change. Here is what I came up with. Tangles used: Munchin, Tipple

Shading done with White Charcoal pencil.

Diva Challenge #238: " UMT- Tri-bee by Beate Winkler, CZT"

Was not sure if I was going to get to the challenge this week. I usually try to do the UMT Challenges because it gives me a chance to try some new tangles. This challenge also gave me an opportunity to work on some things that will be doing in a class a little later this month. The class is on adding color but will doing it with water color washes and alcohol inks. I have used water color washes before but never used alcohol inks. This is my first experience with Dylusions ink. Did not turn out too bad but did not get a really good balance between the two colors. I did a regular white square tile and a Renaissance Zendala® tile. The later is the one that I used for this challenge. The red is not quite as overpowering as what it is on the white tile. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Tri-bee, Flux, Featherfall, Zinger, & Scroll Feather

Highlighting and shading was done with an 01 Micron that is low on ink. Have never done this before, but I like the effect.  

Have not had a chance to look at what others have done. Hoping to get a chance to look at them. Are usually some great pieces of art. Zendala Dare #107

Did not realize how out of practice I was in doing Zendalas. I have used the round Zendala tiles before but more recently it has not been with a template. It is taking me a little bit of adjustment having a template and deciding how I want to use it or even what tangles come to mind when I look at it. I have to admit that the recent templates have been an additional challenge for me. The template is similar to a string and it is a guide that you can decide how you want to follow. I have tended to not modify the templates in the past. May have to revisit that. Here is what I ended up with. I hope you enjoy it.

I was hoping to participate in the Zendala Dare a little more regularly. Have not been able to do so. Will have to examine that as I continue to have a number of other things that are occupying my time. Not sure if some of the challenges lately have been the style of the templates or just my lack of doing them. Am looking forward to looking at what others have done. Diva Challenge #230: "Let's all be ZenDivaDala - Guest Blogger The Bright Owl, Erin Olson, CZT

This week I did not have to make a choice between doing the Diva Challenge or the Zendala Dare as the guest Blogger is Erin Olson, the CZT that does the Zendala Dare. Since she has returned she has definitely come up with some unique templates. This week is no exception. I am not sure about this one. I usually use tangles to complete the different sections. While I used some, or variations of some it is mostly line work. That is different for me. I have seen some people that can do this with really stellar results. Mine are not in that category but it is okay. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Lately have been spending more time trying to get my inventory back up. That is one reason that I have not had as much time to participate, or even respond to recent challenges. Zendala Dare #101: She's Baaaaack !!!

Guess who's baaaaaack? That's right, it is The Bright Owl with Zendala Dare #101. I remember seeing the previous one, but not sure how long ago it was or if I even participated. For a couple years it was one that I participated in regularly and I do enjoy Zendalas. I have to admit that it took a little getting use to. I have not done a lot of Zendalas lately and those that I did were more free hand so I was not dealing with a template. Some would think that having a template would make it easier but there is a little decision making about how you want to use the template. I put the whole template on the tile and just took a little at a time. I started on the outside, then the center and then the middle part and the shading. It really was easier once I decided on the center. Before that I was not sure exactly what I was going to do with the majority of the template. Well enough gabbing. Here is what I came up with. The last I looked there were not a lot of other zendalas posted at The Bright Owl. Hoping that a few more will do something. It is always interesting to see what people do with the templates. Diva Challenge #221: " Beads of Courage"

This week's Diva Challenge is one that occurs yearly. It is to bring attention to the Beads of Courage program. I think that it originally started around kids with cancer but has been expanded to include any child that has a condition that necessitates numerous and ongoing medical evaluations and procedures. The Diva's youngest son has Moebius Syndrome, a neurological disorder that impacts facial muscles. Some things that we take for granted, can be difficult to do, like sucking. It also results in his system being prone to infections. Anyone that has read her blog knows the strain that this puts on her family as well as others.

The Beads of Courage gives these kids a glass bead for every medical procedure that they go through. These kids can have yards of beads. I have participated in this challenge a couple of times. I was not sure that I was going to get anything done this year. I happened to have some time at work today because of no show/cancelled appointments so I decided to start something. I did not plan on using a black zendala tile but when I opened my tote that I use to carry my pens and tiles, this was the only one unused tile I had. Luckily I also had my container that had my metallic gel pens in it. Kept it simple. Not sure if I will do another one or not. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

I forgot how you have to be careful with the gel pens as the ink does not dry as quickly as the Microns. Resulted in a few smudges until I finally was aware enough. In keeping with my practice of using the first tile I complete, I did not start over. Did not really use a lot of tangles. Did a few Cruffle and Printemp circles. Threw in a few Indy-rella for variety. The rest is just line work.

Will be interesting to see what others do. This usually results in some pretty cool tiles. I have not looked at any of them yet, and hope I have time to see them all. Diva Challenge #218: "White on Black on Found"

This week's Diva Challenge is a choice. Can do white on black or tangle on something found.  I have some rocks that I want to get to but they were not found, they were bought. I ended up using a Zendala tile as that is the black tile that I had in my bag that I carry. It worked out well. I did not use a template for this and just started. I did the dividing tangle and then just added others. Cadent is a favorite so I wanted to include that and I wanted to include some organic tiles. I did try a new tangle/pattern from Helen Williams. Guess I have to add to the challenge. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Cadent, Heartrope, Zander, Flux, Zinger,Tumbleweed, and Ahh

Shading done with Prismacolor White pencil with a blender.
I used both a Sakura White Gelly Roll pen and a Signo Uni-ball Angelic White pen for the tangles. Can you tell which tangles I used which pen on?

The new pattern that I tried is Tumbleweed by Helen Williams. It is okay for the first attempt, but not as flowing as I would like or even close to what Helen accomplishes. I will keep trying.

Diva Challenge #208 : "Duotangle - Cubine vs Pokeroot

This week's challenge is a duotangle. This was an interesting challenge as the two tangles are not necessarily good dance partners. I have not searched out what others have done. I have seen a few that have shown up on my blog reader. Not really sure what people have done to get these two to tango together. Will be interesting to see what others have come up with.

I made it a little more interesting as I have not been using a string much lately unless I am doing a class. I had readied a Zendala tile with the template from last week's Zendala Dare and never got around to doing anything with it. Decided to try to use this template for this challenge. Was not quite as easy I as I thought. After I started thought that it might have been easier to reverse the two in the different sections but was too late to do that so just went with what I had. This is one of those tiles that I think I will have to pull out later to look at and decide about it. I think that is more because it is a little different style for me and I had been allowing a little more negative space. Did not do that with this tile.  The one thing that I was pleased with is that I tried the technique posted on FB of using older microns to shade. I did this with the Poke Root and am pleased with the results. For me to say I am pleased with shading does not occur very often.   Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it,

Diva Challenge # 207: "UMT - Unbatz by Sandy Hunter, CZT

As is usual for the Diva Challenge the first challenge of the month is a Use My Tangle (UMT) Challenge. The one chosen is Unbatz by Sandy Hunter. I have to admit that I do not remember seeing this tangle before. I have looked at her blog before and I like the combination of tangles that she has created, but I have not seen, or done, this one before. I guess that is one reason I like the Diva Challenge, especially the UMT challenges because you get to do tangles that you may not be familiar with. I also decided to use a Zendala tile instead of a square tile. Maybe because I doubt that I will be able to get to The Zendala Dare this week. There were a few uncertain moments with this one but I am pleased with the end result. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Diva Challene #203: "UMT - Athitzi by Seven

Have been busy most of the week with family things. Have not had a lot of time to do much tangling. Was not sure if I would get anything done for this challenge. I finally decided that I needed the time to unwind because of all the things going on. It was my way to take care of myself. This week's challenge is a Use my Tangle challenge. This is an unusual tangle and like Margaret Bremner, think of it more as a technique, but it can have dramatic results. The results on Seven's blog are a good example of this. You can click HERE to see her stepout and examples. I did not have a lot of time to play with this tangle so I kept it simple. Not totally thrilled with the results but also not totally disappointed either. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Athitzi, Hollibaugh, Gneiss, Betweed, Tipple, &  Stripes.  Not sure the others are tangles. One is stippling and the other is auraing the shape. 

Shading was done with #2 pencil.

Hope this shows up well, I usually take a picture but do not have access to my camera so I had to scan it and then try to enlarge it. Did not use a template. Was not too difficult. Normally when I do a free-hand Zendala, I start in the middle and work my way out. This time I started on the edge of the tile with the UMT and moved inward. The next thing I did is to do Gneiss and then did the curvy Hollibaugh. Finished by choosing different tangles to fill in the spaces. Decided to leave a few blank and just shade as it seemed like it was getting a little busy. It has been a while since I have done a Zendala and I started this before I realized that Erin at The Bright Owl had posted another Zendala Dare. Not sure I will have time to get to that one this time, but hope to do those again. I still have to learn to use the Zendala template makers I won also. Well that is enough rambling,

Playing with Betweed

This week's prompt on Square One is Betweed. I all ready did a tile but wanted to play with it a little more. did not really want to do it on a traditional tile. Saw some great examples of Betweed and wanted to try some different things. Used black and white but in this case I used a black Zendala tile with a white pen. Still did it more symmetrical. If I have time may try something that is with more random spaces. I just wanted to try different ways to do the lines. As is sometimes ( read most of the time), the case it did not turn out exactly the way I envisioned it in my head, but that is okay. Gave a chance to get some practice highlighting and shading the black tiles also. Here is what I ended up with.

This ended being a exercise with Betweed and Indy-rella. The shading was done with a Zenstone and a white Prismacolor pencil. The more I look at it the more comfortable I am with it. Have not used my white pens for a while and they seemed to be a little sticky. Did not cover quite the way I would have liked. Had to go over a number of the lines. I used the Uniball Angelic white gel pen and the Sakura white gel pen, medium point. The string is random radii. Then filled in the spaces with Betweed. Was not anything special.

Diva Challenge # 177 : " Truffle by Caroline Broady, CZT" #2

While the first one I did was okay, did not think that I really did justice to the tangle. I also wanted to try a few new things so I made a second tile. This time I used a larger scale for Truffle and I did the work on a Renaissance zendala tile. Probably the biggest thing was that I wanted to do more with color. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Truffle, Maryhill, Scrawlz

Probably not the best choice but I used a combination of different colored pencils. I did want to see how smooth a finish I could get with my generic Loew-Cornell® pencils. I got these because they were inexpensive and could get a lot of different colors. They do not cover, or go on as smoothly as my Irojiten, Inktense or Prismacolor pencils. The white is the Prismacolor and the green on Scrawlz is the Irojiten.  I did learn that I have to be patient to get a richer color with the Loew-Cornell pencils. Needed many more layers. Over all I am pleased with the results and did accomplish what I wanted.

Diva Challenge # 176: " B.Y.O.B" - # 2

Won't go into any of the background on the challenge as this is my second tile. I decided to do another one as I was less than satisfied with my first. While I was not any more enthusiastic about the challenge, I was more pleased with the result. I chose to do the second one on a zendala tile and I made a much larger stain. I think this helped with deciding what I wanted to do, but it still took some time. Here is what the stain looked like before I started tangling.

I usually take a couple of different pictures, using different setting of my completed tile.  I could not decide which one I liked the best so I put them both on here.

Tangles used: Phicops, Florz

I used a sepia marker to do Phicops. The shading was done with both Derwent  and Irotijen pencils. The Derwent was Baked Earth and I used Bamboo and Maple Syrup Irojiten pencils. I was pleased with the results of the shading. I thought about shading Florz but decided not to. Some of this was based on time, but also I liked the contrast that the simple black/white tangle provided.

Zendala Dare #94 - Happy

Was not sure I was going to get any of the challenges done this week. It has been a very hectic week and not sure that things will change anytime in the near future. Was glad to see that Erin had returned to post the Zendala Dare. As is typical for the first dare of the month, she added the extra challenge of Happy. She suggested that people could use tangles that started with the letters in the word happy. I have to admit that after I started, I kind of forgot about the extra challenge. I did get one letter as I used Hollibaugh and I did use tangles that I enjoy, and I am happy that she will be able to post a Zendala Dare for at least a couple of months. I hope that this qualifies as meeting the criteria for the Dare. Here is what I came up with.  I hope that you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Knightsbridge, Flux, Zinger, Ennies, Hollibaugh, 'Nzeppel (variation)
I have a student that does 'Nzeppel freehand. I have never tried this before so decided to try it here. Did not turn out exactly like I pictured it but was pleased with it for a first try.

This is getting posted late enough that I am assuming that most anyone that sees this has all ready looked at the things posted on the Bright Owl. However if not, would suggest that you do so. I hope to look at some of them this evening. I have no idea even how many have participated this week.

Zendala Dare #91

Getting this completed late in the week. Have mixed feelings about this one. I enjoyed doing most of the tangles but when got down to the finishing it was tough. I tend to fill in most spaces so am trying to leave some negative space. Was not sure if should just shade or put in some color, or just leave it entirely blank. If would have had more time could have copied this and tried all three to see which I liked best but decided to go with the shading. Did not turn out the way that I envisioned but is not bad. Hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Dragonair, Shattuck, Betweed, 

Used a 6B for the shading in the center, a 4B in the next and a 2HB on the outside. Evened it out with a blending stump.

Have not looked at any of the other posts, except for Erin's. Would encourage you to go to The Bright Owl and look at what others have done.
