Glass disc Christmas ornaments: 2.5" glass discs with Dura-lar® inserts

Well it is that time of year. Actually I am a little behind schedule to have many new things for the holiday season. Completed one of these and then took me quite a while to get anything else done. Doing these really makes it clear why the Zentangle® method is easier. Whenever try to do ZIAs, get into the issues that do not come up with the basic method. I obsess too much about color combinations. Oh well, I just have to remember to start and see where it takes me. 

These are glass discs and the inserts are 2.5" circles of Dura-lar®. The drawing was done with Microperms and the color was added with either Prismacolor or Faber-Castell polychromes. The polychromes seemed to cover a little more consistently but was pleased with the way that they all turned out. Do not have WIP pictures. The first is a finished one. 

Tangle is Stella with generic leaves.  Cut the circle just a smidge too small so this insert moves in side the disc.

Here are 3 more on Dura-lar Decided to complete all of them before I put them inside the discs. Was just a preference. I like them all but think my favorite is the one in the upper right. That one also gave me the most difficulty deciding what colors I wanted to use. That is what all the color marks on the side. Not sure how much it helped but did help decide to go ahead with certain colors and just let it happen. I also used the Prismacolor metallic silver and gold pencils in this one. I am not sure what the leafy purple tangle is called. I have a lot of variations in my journal but did not write down the name of the tangle. It is similar to Amarin by Debbie New but not sure. It is possible that it was one of those challenges that was to play with Flux and see what different variations could come up with. The basic structure is very similar to Ynix.  Unfortunately not writing down the names of tangles is something I  do too often.  Here are the 3 I came up with.

If you have not used Dura-lar before, it comes in sheets or a roll. I bought a pad of 9"x12" sheets. They will accept ink, pencil, and colored pencil. These are matte finish and can be drawn on both sides. I chose not to do that as you can pick up the image on both sides. I did not try it but it claims to erase easily.  On next ones may try to do some with my colored Microns. will have to be fewer tangles as do not have as many colors in those. Could also use my IdentiPens as the ink in those is similar but there are a few more colors. Not sure if I will get to them this year or not as I have a couple of other projects that I need to work on.

Beyond the Basics class: Tangled 3-D House

Just completed a class using Dorian Eng's tangled houses concept.  Was a fun enjoyable class.  Was a challenge getting them together but learned a few things that I will use if I do the class again.  Here are pictures of the different pieces to the house.

Only a picture of the gable that is in the front of the house.  The back is similar except  there are no flowers and I did the tangle Gneiss where the window is on this one.

Here are the tiles for the roof.  I used the tangle Shing.

These are the two sides.

The one on the right is one of the student's houses.  This is the front.  I took a series of all sides.  Here they are.

One student had the tangling done but did not get it all constructed. She is a big Harry Potter fan.  She did a Slithering theme.  Here is the picture I took of what she had done in the class.

She sent me a picture of the finished house after class. She has Harry Potter lego figures in front and used an electric candle for the lighting.

She added tissue paper behind the window cut-outs for an additional "green glow".  Said she was looking for a darker green and may put that in it.

Beyond the Basics class: Layered water color background

Do not post much about things that I do in a class but this was an interesting class.  I had introduced using a water color wash before but did not spend much time on adding layers.  Wanted to have them take their time putting down the water color before they tangled on the piece.  Am waiting to see the finished pieces as they were all so different.  One used a lot of small sections of color and used a lot of organic tangles, which is what she enjoys. With her permission may post a picture of it later.  I am showing the piece that I did.  I used larger sections of color and layered the same color on top. Did not try to layer different colors for muted or different effects.  Will post a series of pictures showing the piece as it progressed.  Really did not have a plan when I started. Picked a tangle and just let it develop.  Here is the results.

Thought I had a picture of just the water color but I guess that I did not .  I first did  what I am calling "Semi-crazy" Huggins.  Is not a regular grid but not too much "wonkiness".  I then put in Finery and then Puf.  

Next I added Inapod and then put Paradox around the outside.

I then added Zander in both sections. The next was the Flora variation and then added the Phicops and Zingers to finish it off.

I then added Mooka, Flux, and Tipple.  The Tipple was added and randomly.  Was looking at different orientations when I took this picture.

And here is the finished piece with the last section finished.   The paper is water color paper and is 6"x 8". 

The last tangle is Opsess, one that I did the step out for.

I have a couple of other projects I want to get to but want to do something like this again.  I would like to use smaller areas of color and try more blending like when doing the gems.  That is a time consuming process so not sure when I will get to it.

Diva Challenge #347: "String Theory - Traced Objects "

This was a different challenge this week. I have participated in string theory challenges before but not sure if I had done a traced object one before.  Started this early in the week and just did not get to it.  Think there was a little procrastination as I was not sure what to do.  Still was not sure even after I had traced some things.  The challenge was to use things that were around you at the time not necessarily to pick something specific.  Will give more details later.  I used a Renaissance tile.  Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Hollibaugh, Zander, Knightsbridge, Mooka, Tipple, & Flux

Did not say above but decided to take a picture of the tile before I did any highlighting or shading.   Was not sure what I wanted to do. At first was thinking of just using graphite.  I have used graphite on the Renaissance tiles before but not really a big fan of it.  Had done some layering of colored pencils to get more of a sepia shade for shading but did not really want to take, or have, the time to do this.  I finally decided I would use a white charcoal pencil

Here is what it looks like with the white highlights.

Not really sure how I feel about this.  It is okay.  Could not decide what I wanted to do with Hollibaugh so just left it with no  shading or highlighting.  

Almost forgot to mention what I used to create the string.  The bottom is a wooden handle on a crochet hook.  The two orbs are the inside of the finger holes on a pair of small craft scissors.  The last is the battery cover for my mouse.  I have to confess that what it reminded me of was a ferry boat that was on Lake Erie. It was primarily a vehicle transport and was referred to as the "cup and saucer".  Would go out to the Bass Islands off the Ohio coast.

Have not looked at what others have done.  May not even get to it before the next challenge.  Should be some interesting things as there about anything could be used to create your string.  If you have a chance would strongly recommend that you go to I am the Diva and see what others have come up with.

ZIA Variation on Aloha

When I did the Diva Challenge using Aloha I had mentioned that I was working on something that I was going to use a variation of it in. I finally was able to complete it.  This is a picture mat for a 5x7 picture.  It will fit in an 8x10 frame. I used a blue 01 micron. Did not do any shading on this. I could but I like it enough without it that I am going to leave it.  Have really enjoyed using Zander lately. Works great as a border or as a string.  Here is what I came up with. Diva Challenge #250: " Bringing it Back to the Old School"

It has really been a long time since I have been able to participate in one of the Diva Challenges. I almost made it last week as I really liked the two tangles that were used in the Duotangle. This week's challenge is to go back to the basics of Zentangle®. That basic structure that we all learned and try to teach in our Basic classes. It was to use a square white tile and use only a black pen and a pencil for shading.

I, like the Diva wrote, see all the different things that people are doing and think ... I need to try that. Part of the appeal of tangling and the Zentangle® method is its simplicity. I still have not tried the gems that are popping up all over. I feel  like the last two months I have been in "production mode". Have done little basic tangling. I still have a lot of things to do but this was a nice break.

Here is what I came up with. In addition to only using the basic tools, I also used a string that I use in my basic class. Some, but not all the tangles, are ones that I use in a basic class. I hope you enjoy it.

Diva Challenge #229: "+/ - ", Guest Blogger Sandy Hunter,CZT

These week's Guest Blogger is Sandy Hunter. She may be best known for some of her tangles and her tangle remix. They are fun to do . Her challenge is not just to have some negative space, but to make it the focus of the tile. This was harder than I thought. I have not used strings for a while. I usually just pick a tangle and start. I though about doing this and seeing what negative space was left. I decided to not do this and settled for a string with a basic star/flower shape. I had some ideas of what I wanted to do but I am not sure that it ended up leaving the white space as the star of the tile. I decided to use the black/brown color combo and this may have taken away from having the negative space be the focus. The tile itself, I like but not sure that it was successful in addressing the challenge. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Zander, Shattuck, Merryweather

Shading done with HB, 4B graphite pencils. Color highlighting done with Prismacolor Pencils (Golden rod, Burnt Ochre, and White. 

When I decided to use Merryweather, did not realize that it was a tangle developed by the Sandy Hunter. Went to check the step-out and then saw it. Decided to keep it as it seemed to fit. Zendala Dare # 102: Two in a Row & a New Job

The Bright Owl is on a roll posting two Zendala Dares in a row. She does have a reason to be pleased with her ability to do this as she is starting a new job which allows her to use her Nursing degree. Starting a new job while exciting is also stressful. Hopefully, creating her zendala allowed her to relax a little. This is an interesting template. Kind of fits in with this week's Diva Challenge on simplicity. Last week's template had a multitude of sections. This one had a lot of larger space. Simplicity and  easy are not always synonymous. I actually had more difficulty deciding what to do with this template. I finished this earlier but did not get around to posting it right away. That is probably a good thing as this is one of those tiles that my first reaction was so-so. After letting it set a while and then looking at it again, I am more pleased with it. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Betweed, Cubine, Flux, Shattuck, Blooming Butter with Mak-Rah-Mee, Cadent, Antidots, & Zander.

The shading is done with 2B and 4B pencils. 

The center ring is somewhat inspired by some stacked circles that I have seen on the FB Stacked and Tangled page. Did not really turn out exactly like I envisioned, but that is okay.  Have only looked at The Bright Owl's blog a little. The last I looked there were only a few things posted. I hope more take the time to  do something and post it. I know it is hard and there are more challenges now than when she first started the Zendala Dare. I enjoy doing them and it is different than the other challenges and FB page ideas/focus. Not sure that I will get to every one she posts and will probably have to rotate what I participate in a little. Diva Challenge #218: "White on Black on Found"

This week's Diva Challenge is a choice. Can do white on black or tangle on something found.  I have some rocks that I want to get to but they were not found, they were bought. I ended up using a Zendala tile as that is the black tile that I had in my bag that I carry. It worked out well. I did not use a template for this and just started. I did the dividing tangle and then just added others. Cadent is a favorite so I wanted to include that and I wanted to include some organic tiles. I did try a new tangle/pattern from Helen Williams. Guess I have to add to the challenge. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Cadent, Heartrope, Zander, Flux, Zinger,Tumbleweed, and Ahh

Shading done with Prismacolor White pencil with a blender.
I used both a Sakura White Gelly Roll pen and a Signo Uni-ball Angelic White pen for the tangles. Can you tell which tangles I used which pen on?

The new pattern that I tried is Tumbleweed by Helen Williams. It is okay for the first attempt, but not as flowing as I would like or even close to what Helen accomplishes. I will keep trying.

Diva Challenge #209: "Saint Patty's"

The Diva Challenge this week was a holiday theme in honor of St. Patrick's Day. Theme was to "green up" your tile. It was a toss up for me to use my Intense pencils or the Koi watercolor pens. I chose the later only in that I have not used them a lot and trying to experiment with them. I used them to lay down a wash. Was not really happy with the way that they blended but did not try a lot. I turned out okay. There are a couple of sections that turned out a little darker than I  would have liked but it turned out okay. Then came the challenge to use the wash as the string and decide how I was going to do it. I stuck with some old favorites for the tangles. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: Antidots, 'Nzeppel, Shattuck, Zander, Paradox

Did not doe much shading on this one. The little I did was with the micron. The difference in the intensity is that I started using an older Micron which totally ran out of ink, Had to switch to a newer one.

Diva Challenge # 207: "UMT - Unbatz by Sandy Hunter, CZT

As is usual for the Diva Challenge the first challenge of the month is a Use My Tangle (UMT) Challenge. The one chosen is Unbatz by Sandy Hunter. I have to admit that I do not remember seeing this tangle before. I have looked at her blog before and I like the combination of tangles that she has created, but I have not seen, or done, this one before. I guess that is one reason I like the Diva Challenge, especially the UMT challenges because you get to do tangles that you may not be familiar with. I also decided to use a Zendala tile instead of a square tile. Maybe because I doubt that I will be able to get to The Zendala Dare this week. There were a few uncertain moments with this one but I am pleased with the end result. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Diva Challenge #206: "Tools/Trade

This week's challenge is to use materials or tools that you do not usually use. Is a lot going on and was not even sure that I would have a chance to do something. Took a few moments last night and did something quickly. What I chose to do was use a new tool. When I did the ZAP program last fall I received a package of things from Sakura. One of the items was a set of Koi watercolor brush pens. I have never used them. Thought this would be the perfect opportunity to pull them out and see what could do. As I usually use the Microns was a challenge to keep some consistency with the brush tips. Did not turn out too bad except for the flux. Got a little heavy handed. Here is what I came up with. Not using my compuer, plus this is a scan, so took a while to get the picture so it was able to be seen. Not exactly the best, but cannot devote any more time to it.

Zendala Dare #96

After a significant absence Erin at The Bright Owl has again started to post the Zendala Dare. She posted one last week, but I was unable to get anything done for that. Before I was pretty regular in posting Zendalas. I like doing them but after not doing them with template for a while, it took a little time getting used to doing them again.

This is an interesting template. I do not remember one quite like this before. There were probably a number of directions one could go with this. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Shading was done with #2 pencil.

Square One: Huggjns

The focus tangle on Square One this week is Huggins. I do not use this a lot. Am more likely to use Cadent. For some reason, getting the lines in the right direction is more challenging on this one. I have to concentrate more on that then just the stroke. The rest of the tile came together rather easily, after some early brain freezes about what to do. Once I started it flowed fairly well. Shading was done with a #2 pencil and stippling.

Square One: Dex

The square one prompt for this week is the tangle Dex. I use to use this one a lot but have not used it recently. For some reason I usually do Dex by making a grid and then add the squares and diagonals. I do not know why, maybe it is because of the way I do my tangle Basquals, I started by making the squares. This is also the way that Zentangle® did the original step out and I did look at this before I did my tile. I think I will go back to using the grid as my Dex is a little wonkier than I had intended. Diva Challenge #174: Superimposing Strings

The Diva is back from Providence, but had another guest direct the challenge this week. Besides needing the time to get back into the swing of things, sounds like she had some other  issues to deal with, somewhat associated with her youngest's disorder. Hopefully things have settled down a little for them. I knew that this week was going to be busy with the holiday and some other things that were going on. Tried to keep it simple but still did not get to this until late. The two strings that I use a lot in my basic class are the "Z" and the triangle. I chose to combine those two for the superimposing strings. I usually decide on the first tangle and then look at what is left to go on to the next. I like Printemps, but I am never quite sure what to do with it as far as shading, etc. Surprisingly, using these two strings, I did not use a lot of the tangles that I usually teach in the Basic class. The only one that I use consistently is Zander. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

I am sure that most of you have all ready looked at all the other tiles /ZIAs posted on I am the Diva, but if not, would strongly recommend that you do so. I have not looked at too many. One last  thing. I had an experience that does not happen often and thought I would share it here. There was a student that was in on one of my Basic classes a while ago and she is always complimentary when she sees me and has recommended my class to others. She is an accomplished artist and does some very beautiful things with colored pencils. She uses a layering technique and gets some fabulous results. This weekend at a First Friday she was the Featured Artist at the gallery where I teach my classes. While I was manning a booth/table trying to sell a few things and drum up business for classes she came out and talked with me. Before she left, she told me that when she had taken the class, she was in a really dry place with her creativity and she did not feel like doing any art. She said that the class really helped get out of that place and helped re-energize her creative juices.  It was after this that she joined the gallery and began plying her craft and creating some great art. I do not have any pictures of them, and she does not have a blog where she posts things, but she tangled on some small gourds. I do not know what type they are. They are a light color and about the size of a clementine.  I do not know what she used to tangle on them but I plan of finding out and will ask her if I can take a picture of them. I appreciated her coming up though and telling how the Basic class had helped her.

Diva Challenge #165: "UMT - Camelia" , Second tile

I got the challenge done quickly enough during the week that I wanted to try something entirely different, This time I used Camelia in a grid. This one was really for me as I just wanted to do something for fun. The tile was done entirely with Sakura Gelly pens and the shading was done with Simply Art colored pencils. I got the pencils a while ago at Meijers. They do not blend the greatest but for generic pencils they are not bad. Did not want to use  a lot of color but just adding highlights. I usually use Microns and may use the Gelly pens for parts of a tile or zendala. This is the first time I did it all with the pens.

 I wanted to try this tangle in the grid as my first one was free form. I saw a lot of posts that people were having difficulty with it. I think on some tangles it is just the way that someone process things. I did not find it a whole lot different than doing free form, except I had the boundaries of the grid lines. This was a little tougher to shade. If I do something like this again, may decide to do something entirely different. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Took this with and with out a flash. I chose the one without the flash as the flash was too bright. Did not take the time to adjust settings to see what else I could not come up with. Not exactly sure why this had such a red tinge to it.

Diva Challenge # 161: "In a Quandary about Quandary"

This is probably going to be a short post. This week's challenge is to use the tangle Quandary. I feel a special connection with this tangle as it is the one that was introduced at my CZT training. I liked it when I first saw it. It has puzzled many though, much like Tripoli, people can get lost in the pattern and also get overly concerned about doing it correctly. I have not had much difficulty with it. I enjoy it. It does have a lot of possibilities and I am sure that you will see many of them in this challenge. This tile may end up serving a dual purpose. It has been quite a week and did not have time to do a tile to send to CBS. Have not decided yet, but I may end up using this one. It will get there later than most of the others but not sure that is as important. Here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Diva Challenge #160: "String Theory: Spiral out, Keep Going! (v.2)"

Was not sure if I was going to get this done before the deadline. I started a while ago but the week has been busy.  I have not even had a chance to look at things that others have submitted. I have not used spirals a lot although I like the ways that I have seen others use them, particularly Shelly Beauch. You can look at some great art by her by clicking on here to go to her blog. I think I got a little ambitious with the things that I tried to put in the spirals. Overall it turned out well. Here is what I came  up with. I hope you enjoy it.

Zendala Dare #92

This zendala turned out way different than I first imagined. Erin at The Bright Owl, posted how she usually approaches the zendala templates and how she did it differently this time. I rarely change the overall character of a template. Like a lot of  people, when I look at it, I think of tangles that might be able to be used in a particular space. I did start out this way but it quickly went in another direction. The "gifted tangle" this week is paradox. I knew that I wanted to use that. Began to look at how I could use it in a less traditional way. Then I decided to do something around the outer edge. I like Quib for this and it worked well. This really resulted in my having to look at some other ways to finish this. Overall I am comfortable with the end product. The process of creating this, even though not completely smooth, was still enjoyable. As typical for me the hardest part is the shading. Wanted to get some perspective/dimension created with this. Not sure how successful I was in doing that. I must admit though that since there has been some time between my completing this and posting, the more I look at it the better I like it.
