New tangle, tangleation or a pattern: SYR

I started exploring different things that could do starting with a basic shape. I started this over a year ago when I posted a page from my journal and called it "S-Ploration". I did not name any of the patterns and I did not do step outs on most of these. One that I did do, and that developed out of this exploration is Opsess. The easiest way to view the journal page is to go to My Tangles page on my blog. You will have to scroll down to S-Ploration.  I decided that it was time for me to finally get this done.

I started with the one that is probably the most involved but it is still simple. It uses intersecting S's. You can add what ever embellishments you can to finish it off. There is one on the journal page that I would consider a variation that I did not include in the step out. I call this SYR. To pronounce it just say the letters (ess-why-er). I chose this because it reminds me of iron or wire work. Here is the step out.

Here is a time that I used it when I was doing a demonstration at an event to generate interest in classes.  I am not sure that I have used it in a tile or ZIA.  Here is a section of that newsprint, showing this tangle.

New Tangle, Pattern, Tangleation: Opsess

Those of you that have followed my blog for a while may be familiar with my different posts on using the basic stroke "S" as a basis for tangles. It began about 2 years ago when I was working in my journal.  At the time I did not do anything to do step outs or even name anything. Part of that was deciding what, if any of them constituted a tangle or what was just patterns. Did not really feel like anything was that unique. Here is the page from my journal.

There are 2 on here that I  have used before, but never named. They still remain unnamed. They are the first one in the top row and the fourth one in the bottom row. I used them recently on a bookmark that I posted on Stacked and Tangled and also did a blog entry. Did not get a lot of feedback on it. I came up with a few different variations on the bookmark. To avoid having to go between pages, here is another copy of  the bookmark 

You can see most of the ones from my journal on this bookmark. The one above Knightsbridge was a new variation. After I did it I began thinking about what it would look like if I varied the direction of the "S".Tried a couple of different things and that is how Opsess came about. I did a tile and posted on the Certified Zentangle FB site. Did not get a lot of feedback or comments but decided that it was different. Think the basic structure of the tangle leaves things open for a lot of variation. I have not played with a lot but here is the step out and a few variations.

The one on the top left was developed at the same time and is a tangleation of Pea-Nuckle. I have a step out of that in process and will post it sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Diva Challenge #184: "New Official Tangle: ING by Molly" , 2nd Post

As I indicated in the earlier post for this challenge I wanted to do another tile. Part of the reason for this is that it gave me more time to experiment with this tile. I did not try to change the lines of it that much and focused more on trying different things inside and not just shading it. Here is what I came up with. It has a Hollibaugh effect to it. I hope you enjoy it.

Tangles used: ING, Stripes, Knightsbridge, Fasset, Ahh, Beads, Paradox, and Scrawlz

I was not sure about using Paradox as was not sure how it would turn out. I like the way it whooshes across the page. 

I have only been able to see about half of the things posted so far so hope to see the rest soon. There have been some unique and creative things that people have done. New Tangle, Tangleation, or just a pattern? Not sure: Basquals

Finally getting around to posting this. I had posted it earlier on a FB page for CZTs and got a number of comments. This is a tough one as I think there are some basic shapes and/or elements that can be a base and it can then go in a lot of different directions. A prime example of this is Bales. There is a basic structure and there are so many different ways you can take it. Are these tangleations of Bales or are they new tangles. I really do not have an answer to that question. I can show you what I did. This picture is what started it all. Saw it in an ad on the internet. Had not seen it before, so decided to play with it.

 Here is a step out and a simple way to fill it. There are numerous other possibilities, and I will show you what I came up with later.  Here is the step out.

Not terribly difficult. Step #5 is just one of about 15 possible ways that I came up with to finish it off. I enjoy doing this. Start with a basic element and then just experiment. I did this with "S" shape also. Did not name anything on that and have not gotten it posted to My Tangle page yet.  Here are the different ways that I came up with to finish Basquals.

I do not know whether these are tangleations or some of them would be separate tangles. Some are very similar to Dex and Panes. Would be interested in any comments or ideas that you have.

New Tangle, Embellishment, or Tangleation: Whee

When I was first introduced to Zentangle® I was playing around one day just seeing what I could come up with. I came up with something that my sister has used since a couple of times and I did submit it to Tangle Patterns, but it was never posted there. I have used it a few times on things and decided to pull it out to use on this week's Diva Challenge. I do not get a lot of comments on my blog, but there was some consistency in people commenting that they liked this tangle. I figured that since there was some interest and I had never put in a post I would put it out there because others might be interested also. I have started a page of My Tangles so it will always be available there also.

After posting this, and after receiving a comment, I did find out that Melissa Hoppes had created a tangle Frippery, that is very similar to this. The step outs are different, but they end in a similar fashion. The only place I know it is available is in Kass Hall's Zentangle Untangled.

It has a number of  possibilities but may tax your need for symmetry depending on how you approach it. The name was picked because as I was drawing it, I thought of going down a curling slide and the glee that might be expressed, thus Whee.

Hope you enjoy it and would be open to seeing things that you tried with it. Here is the step out.

This is a tile that I used it in recently.  As you can see, you  can get quite a different look depending on how you fill,shade, or embellish it.

New Tangle, Tangleation, or just a pattern? : Genoa & Gingajava

When the Diva Challenge on grid seeds was done, I put out a grid seed which I could not come up with a name for.  Thanks to some comments from some visitors to my blog, I have come up with a name and developed another grid seed pattern. Katydidsworld said that it reminded her of an Italian floor tile. That was not the genesis for this tile, but I liked the possibilities. She recommended that could use the name of an Italian city such as Milan. I looked up what the word for tile was in Italian and it had possibilities. One word that it gave is piastrella. Not really sure of the pronunciation but it had potential. Then my sister reminded me that if I was thinking of using an Italian town name, we had such a name in our own background. We lived close to a town called Genoa and that was also the name of the high school that I graduated from. Hmm... What to do as I had talked with the person whose object was the original seed for the tangle. What to do. I went back and looked at the picture I had taken of the pattern and realized that while what I had done in the grid seed really was different and I actually had two different grid seeds. Problem solved. I hope.  Here is the step-out for the pattern that was in the Diva Challenge. I decided to go with the name Genoa.

As I said, I realized that the original inspiration for the tangle was similar but quite different. I decided to do a separate step-out for that one as well. I won't go into the details behind the name but it is to recognize the person who had the object that inspired the pattern.  I have decided to call this Gingajava.  Here is the step-out for this grid seed. I hope you enjoy it. 

As far as I know neither of these have been done before. If someone is aware that either of these have been posted by someone else, please let me know.

New Tangle, or just a pattern: Patchett

This is not a pattern that came out of my head but something that I saw while shopping. When I got home I quickly sat down to recreate and deconstruct. May not look exactly like the original. Cannot really tell as I do not have any pictures of it. Would like feedback from other CZT's and tangling enthusiasts if this is an  already established tangle. I could not find anything where I searched, but as I mentioned there are so many different tangles now it is hard to remember.

Here is the Step - out:

Did not spend a lot of time looking at variations. I am sure that there are many more and that with all the great tanglers out there, there will be more.  I have not used this a lot either. When I did it was as a single thumbnail.  Here is the Zendala where I used it.

I appreciate any feedback, comments or insights.

Now if I am lucky, I can get a start on this week's Zendala Dare.

Tangleation, New Tangle, or just a pattern : Tierso

Really looking for some assistance from fellow CZT's and other tangling enthusiasts.  Was sitting and thinking about the spindles that would see on stairways and architectural dividers. Began drawing and came up with something that I am not sure if it is new or something that stuck in my brain from other things that I had seen. It has some components similar to other tangles but this is put together a little differently.  I do not want to take anything away from anyone else so if anyone is aware of this being an all ready established tangle, please let me know. I have tried to research it a little but there are so many and different places where they get posted. Have not seen anything like it, but there are so many tangles now.

The name is not really significant. Used a word generator and the small orbs reminded me a little of tears, so when I saw Tierso, it seemed to fit. I first thought of Newell, but that name is all ready taken by Sandy B.

First, here is the Step - out:

Makes a simple border but can combine it to cover an area. I have not used it a lot but did use a variation in a recent Zendala. The area was not large enough to use as a complete fill. Here is what that looked like. Some of you may remember it.

Diva's Weekly Challenge #100!: New Tangle and a Diva Dance

This is the 100th Diva Challenge that Laura Harms has posted. I have only been participating in a small number of those, having only begun this year. I hope to participate in many more though. I do appreciate the challenges though because it does make me try new things and new tangles. Hopefully it also makes me more proficient in this art form. In honor of this momentous hallmark, the guest contributors are Maria Thomas and  Rick Roberts, founders of Zentangle®. A new tangle, the Diva Dance was introduced. The Challenge is to use it in this week's tiles.

Here is my attempt at using this new tangle. Hope you like it.

New Tangle, an Embellishment, or Just a Pattern - Rugz

Taking a break from getting things ready for the Art/Gift Show. I may pay for it later but need a break. First want to say how surprised and humbled by the number of views that the step outs for Fearcles and Exed got.        Some of this is due to it being listed on Genivieve Crabe's Weekly Zentangle Round-up(thanks Sis). I also posted it on Flickr in the Freehand Doodles Group. Not sure how many duplicates there might have been but got over 400 views on them. Was surprised. Wish a few more had left comments though. Hope to see it showing up in some other peoples's work. This is about a new one which I am not really sure what to call it. It came about at the training. Took a lot of pictures of patterns that I saw while out for a walk, this one was right under my nose as it was in the hallway carpeting of the hotel. Here is what that looked like.

Here is the step-out I created on the pattern.

Here is an example of using it on one of the coasters that I am making for the Art/Gift Show.

Was really a nice fill pattern for this. The border around it is a variation of Hybrid. The tile is a 4x4" Field tile from Menard's. Was another CZT 10 that I shared part of the flight home with, who drew my attention to the similarity of this to another tangle. Also not sure that all patterns are tangles. 

Would be interested in hearing from others as to what they think. 

Have to get back to work on the things for the Art/Gift Show. Will try to post some pictures of some of the things I have done, or may just wait until I set the display up and take a picture of that. Hope to get back to the Zendala Dare and Diva Challenge soon. 

New Tangle: Fearcles

While I had some time decided I may as well go ahead and post this one as well. This one was actually developed before Exed.. Was experimenting with a grid and possibilities and this is what developed. Is versatile in that can be used to fill a single space, a line, or as fill in a space. It is a  little intensive so cannot be used as well in small spaces with out some modifications. Went through the same process in trying to come up with a name. Nothing really seemed to really grab me. Thought at one time about settia as the one section reminded me of the poinsettia plants but opted not to use that. Came up with the name because the first lines reminded me of feathers and then the rest is finished off with circles, thus Fearcles.

There are a lot of possible ways to fill. Have never used without some type of fill. If you decide to use would love to let me know as I am curious to see how others might use this, fill it and any variations. Here is the step out.

Here are some examples of when I have used it

This one of the first attempts at using the black tiles. Did not attempt any shading. Still not comfortable with that part of it. Will have to do more of these to get the hang of using the white charcoal pencil.This though I think had too much fill to do much shading.

Here is an example of where I had to modify it because of space. I tried putting in the small circles in the center of the feathers with a white gel pen but did not like the way it looked so just put black over them.

Interested in any attempts to use and how it has worked for you. Have fun with it.

New Tangle: Exed

Have been meaning to get this posted for some time but just have not had time. This came about by accident as I was just making random marks and the pattern began to take shape. Have used in a variety of ways and also have filled it in. At other times I have just left it with no fill, almost like a screen. Here is the step out. Would be interested in seeing how others use it or other variations that people come up with.

Found that when using this it does help to keep the arcs as consistent as possible. Below are a couple of possibilities for filling it in. I am partial to the last one.

Here are some examples of where I used the tangle.

 I am not good at thinking of names. Part of the reason that I did not post this for a while is that I did not have a name for it. Finally decided on Exed as after the arcs, it is finished by making exes. Not too original or catchy but it works. Hope you have fun using this.

Zendala Dare #24

This is my first attempt at a Zendala. Know that it is a late submission, but was busy at the CZT training most of the week. Was not able to finish this until today. Hope to do more in the future.

Most of these are common tangles. Used Flux, Paradox, Fescu, Hybrid, and the one in the corner is my own creation that I named Fearcles. Have not posted any directions for it yet. Still new at this blog thing. Will try to get that done in the next couple of days.
